DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM YOUMANS

Introduction

	This is a summary family history of a more extensive, 170 page, genealogy of 
the decedents of William YOUMANS compiled by Thomas (Tom) YOEMANS, starting back in 
1972.   Tom is the son of Glen Albert5 Yoemans.  He and Mike Yoemans, the son of 
Walter Robert5 Yoemans, have been collaborating for a number of years to further 
research the ancestors of William YOUMANS.  Except for some tantalizing clues, 
nothing has been discovered beyond the year of 1780.

1.  William1 YOUMANS was born in New York about 1780.  He married Lydia SHAW about 
1808.  Lydia was born about 1791 in Albany County, NY.  She was the daughter of 
William SHAW and Sarah A. (Ackley) SHAW.  William was a veteran of the War of 
1812.  William removed to Madison County before 1820, the first year he is listed 
on the census of the town of Nelson.  In 1850 he listed his occupation as farmer. 
William is buried Morrisville, Madison County, NY.  After William’s death, Lydia 
migrated along with her married children Lake County Illinois, and then, onto 
Horton, Bremer County, Iowa.  Her body was interred at Horton Cemetery in Bremer 
County, Iowa.  William and Lydia resided in Westmoreland, Oneida County, NY until 
about 1819.  William and Lydia had the following children: 

      i  Alanson Youmans was born October 5, 1808
 2   ii  Stephen Vincent YOUMANS was born June 10, 1810 
    iii  Sarah J. Youmans was born December 2, 1811 
     iv  Lydia Ann Youmans was born December 12, 1814 
      v  Elizabeth Youmans was born November 13, 1816 
     vi  Mary Youmans was born April 8, 1821 
    vii  Thomas A. Youmans was born circa 1825
   viii  Cheney Morris Yeomans was born April 2, 1830



2.  Stephen Vincent2 YOUMANS (William1) was born in Oneida County, NY June 10, 1810. 
He married Cynthia FRENCH SHELDON March 12, 1840 in Morrisville, Madison County, NY.  
Cynthia was born May 15, 1820 in Morrisville.  She was the daughter of Hezekiah H. 
SHELDON and Sally (FRENCH) SHELDON.  Stephen died August 31, 1887 in Horton, Bremer
County, Iowa, at 77 years of age.  His body was interred at Horton Cemetery.  
Cynthia died July 23, 1890 in Horton, Bremer County, Iowa, at 70 years of age. Her 
body was interred at Horton Cemetery.  Stephen migrated from Madison County, New 
York and settled in Lake County, Illinois in 1857.  After farming in the town of 
Vernon for ten years, he migrated to Bremer County, Iowa, following the path of 
his brother-in-law, James ELDREDGE.  Stephen farmed in that place for many years.  
Stephen and Cynthia had the following children: 

      i  Youmans (Unnamed). 
     ii  Stephen Van Rensler Youmans was born August 16, 1840.  
    iii  James DeWitt Youmans was born August 19, 1842. 
     iv  Cynthia Mariah Youmans was born August 26, 1844. 
      v  Bicknell Bennett Youmans was born October 9, 1847. 
     vi  Joseph Youmans was born November 20, 1848. 
    vii	 Emmaline Youmans was born February 18, 1851
3  viii  Lafayette James YOUMANS was born May 5, 1853
     ix  John D. Youmans was born November 25, 1858. 



3.  Lafayette James3 YOUMANS (Stephen Vincent2, William1) was born May 5, 1853 in 
Morrisville, Madison County, NY.  He married Jessica FREMONT OBERDIEAR July 20, 1874 
in Horton, IA.  Jessie was born November 15, 1858 in Belvidere, Winnebago County, 
Illinois.  She was the daughter of Levi OBERDIEAR and Sarah A. (Fish) OBERDIEAR.  
Lafe moved with his family to Lake County, Illinois in 1857, and then to Bremer 
County, Iowa in 1866.  Lafe died December 15, 1940 in Mankato, Blue Earth County, 
Minnesota, at 87 years of age.  His body was interred at Sunset Rest Cemetery, in 
Northwood, Worth County, Iowa.  Jessie died June 5, 1930 in Northwood, Worth County, 
Iowa, at 71 years of age.  Her body was interred at Sunset Rest Cemetery, in 
Northwood, Worth County, Iowa.  Lafe moved from Bremer County, Iowa and relocated 
in New York Mills, Otter Tail County, Minnesota about October 1879.  He moved 
from Minnesota and relocated in Kensett, Worth County, Iowa in 1880.  Lafe lived 
at Kensett and Northwood for many years.  He was employed as a painting contractor.  
He became Frank Ervin Mitchell Youmans’ adoptive father about 1913 in Northwood, 
Worth County, Iowa.  Lafayette and Jessica had the following children: 

      i  Frank Lafayette Youmans was born February 26, 1875 
     ii  Caroline Cynthia Youmans was born September 10, 1876. 
    iii  Sarah Augusta Youmans was born August 2, 1879.
 4   iv  Stephen Harry Yoemans was born June 11, 1880.
      v  John Hall Youmans was born January 24, 1882. 
     vi  Etta May Youmans was born June 17, 1884. 
    vii  Thomas Woodworth Youmans was born July 18, 1886. 
   viii  Elizabeth Wren Youmans was born June 16, 1888. 
     ix  Marie French Youmans was born June 25, 1890. 
      x  Albert Nutting Yoemans was born February 16, 1893. 
     xi  Everett Elsworth Youmans was born in January 26, 1896



4.  Stephen Harry4 YOEMANS (Lafayette James3, Stephen Vincent2, William1) was born in 
New York Mills, Otter Tail County, MN, on June 11, 1880.   He was born while 
Lafayette as working in Minnesota, but returned with the family to Northwood, 
Iowa, where he received his education.  Around 1904 he moved to Aitkin County, 
Minnesota.  Stephen worked in thewoods of the White Elk area. Stephen died 
March 22, 1945 in Seattle, King County, Washington, at 64 years of age.  
He married Nettie May PORTER November 8, 1904 in Aitkin, Aitkin County, MN.  
Nettie May was born December 20, 1880 in MN.  Nettie May was the daughter of 
Alva James K. PORTER and Emily Jane (Wickersham) PORTER.  Alva James K. Porter 
was the son of Cornelius and Mary Porter.  Alva’s father and mother were 
listed on the census along with his family.  Their ages were listed as 79 and 
75 respectively.  On this basis, Cornelius birthday is estimated to be 1801. 
Mary is estimated to be 1805.  Nettie May died January 3, 1973 in Seattle, King 
County, Washington, at 92 years of age.  Her body was interred at Lakeview 
Cemetery, in Aitkin, Aitkin County, MN.   Stephen and Nettie May had the following 
children: 

      i  James Lafayette Yoemans was born March 12, 1905. 
     ii  Alice Inez Yoemans was born August 4, 1906. 
    iii  Erma Beryl Yoemans was born August 16, 1908. 
     iv  Laura Marie Yoemans was born September 22, 1910. 
      v  Stephen Harry Yoemans was born February 18, 1913. 
     vi  Nettie May Yoemans was born October 2, 1914. 
    vii  Glen Albert Yoemans was born November 18, 1916. 
   viii  John Edward Yoemans was born September 15, 1918. 
     ix  Thomas Richard Yoemans was born August 4, 1920. 
      x  Frank Fremont Yoemans was born December 5, 1922. 
     xi  Warren Howard Yoemans was born August 27, 1924. 
    xii  (Unnamed) Yoemans was born in White Elk Township (T50W,R27W),
           Aitkin County, Minnesota May 15, 1926.  (Unnamed) died. 
   xiii  Walter Robert Yoemans was born May 18, 1930.
